Web/Mobile App Critique
The app I have selected to review
is Tik Tok, a social app used to create and share videos. An array of
content is shared on Tik Tok daily, such as music videos, photos, sound
effects, live feeds, and more. TikTok also enables curated user feeds where
artificial intelligence curates what you see based on previous likes, shares,
comments, etc. The application continues to grow in popularity. In its inaugural
forecast on TikTok's global install base, Insider Intelligence, previously
known as eMarketer, predicts that TikTok will reach 755.0 million monthly users
in 2022 after seeing 59.8% growth in 2020, followed by 40.8% growth in 2021
(product plan, 2021).
TikTok embodies the "Hooked
model approach." This approach refers to the user's trigger to utilize the
product, an action to satisfy the motivation, the variable reward for the effort,
and an investment that makes it increasingly valuable to the user (TechCrunch,
2021). Content is viewed one slide at a time which effectively allows most
content to be seen because the app is not having a home page, unlike some of
its neighboring applications, such as Facebook and Instagram. Post information
is always located in the same area. This eliminates scrolling to posts, which
allows for more/quicker posts due to navigational ease.
Tik Tok UX design makes it easy to
access and use. TikTok algorithms allow the application to gauge the user's
viewed content and display future content based on the enjoyer's interests. The
videos on a user's feed are usually higher-ranking videos with multiple likes.
Tik Toks access to a user's personal information, such as pictures, contacts,
etc., allow friends and family to connect, disconnect, or reunite based on the "suggested
accounts" section of the application.
TikTok functionality is trendy
among users. Users can film videos of themselves lip-syncing, dancing, or
acting out sketches. Videos can only be 15 seconds long. However, the user can
connect multiple videos for a total recording time of 60 seconds. TikTok will introduce
several new features as the year progresses. Users can use Bitmoji avatars,
conduct group chats, host audio-only live streams, screen sharing, and
twitch-like subscription features.
Recommendations for improvement:
Cluttered screen: While information
is easy to locate on Tik Tok the screen seems messy. As a result, there are
times when I attempt to press a specific action on Tik Tok; however, by mistake,
I end up pushing a different step in error which is very frustrating at times.
Pinned video section:
This will allow a user's most
popular videos to be pinned to the top of their page, no matter how old the
content is.
Favorited videos:
Searching for favorite videos can
be a task, especially if a user has many. Maybe customizable folders for
favorited videos will help users better organize content. Allowing users to manage
content by month, year, or season will provide better usability.
